Field Log // We head back to base to synthesize data and recharge, but a growing light in the West catches our attention. Atop a dune, we watch the beacon bleed across the sky and ponder the mystery of this phenomenon. The next morning, a dispatch informs us of military activity above a distant ocean. .

Field Log // One small step for a van, one giant leap for vankind. The Yellow Eagle has landed at White Sands National Monument with the intent of studying this otherworldly landscape and its environmental phenomena. “It’s a brilliant surface in that sunlight,” said Neil Armstrong on a similar expedition. “The horizon seems quite close to you because the curvature is so much more pronounced than here on earth. It’s an interesting place to be. I recommend it.” Time to gear up and go on a moonwalk…

Location // Rio Grande Gorge, NM

Field Log // We come across a series of warm pools along the river, and settle in to watch the water slide by. Western explorers Lewis & Clark encountered hot springs on their journey, to less success. Lewis wrote, “I bathed and remained in 19 minutes, it was with dificulty I could remain thus long and it caused a profuse sweat. Two other bold springs adjacent to this are much warmer, their heat being so great as to make the hand of a person smart extreemly when immerced.” Meanwhile, we soak until the setting sun finally sends us homewards.

Field Log // Like a gust of autumn wind, Betty is off again up the High Road to Taos. Chimayo is a gem of this scenic byway, a fertile valley scattered with lovely little chapels. Thousands of hands have come together to build altars, piece by piece. They are exquisite, like visual hymns of this vibrant culture.

Field Log // When we were outward bound to California, so long ago, the sunset filled our windshield and we knew that this shimmering ether was our true destination. What is the Pacific but a seam tenuously linked to the mysterious beyond? On the way there, it was easy to imagine our little Astro Van tumbling over the edge of the world like a comet headed to forever. Now the fiery dusk is but a wisp in our side mirrors. You always have to return home.

Field Log // Everyone knows Arches and Zion, but Bryce Canyon National Park is so remote that far fewer visitors make it here each year. As we meander through great trenches striated with red, orange and yellow, the occasional wanderer passes us, their wide eyes echoing the wonder in our hearts.
