Entry 017 // Maiden Voyage

Location // Badlands National Park
.
Field Log // Betty’s first-ever excursion was a 714.5 mile journey from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Badlands. The 244,000 acre fortress of buttes, pinnacles, spires and grasslands is the site of one of the world’s richest fossil beds. We imagined Betty roaming with beasts her own size: prehistoric rhinos, horses and saber-toothed cats. .

Entry 016 // Betty’s Back
.
Field Log // But for a few short trips, Betty has had a restful winter. As spring approaches, a hungry look returns to her headlights–one that we recognize from our first encounter with her in that overgrown yard in Colorado. Back then, her engine was shot and we had to tow her home to New Mexico. Now, all it takes is the turn of a key to unleash the roar that was our drumbeat last summer. Before Betty sets off on her next adventure, we cast back into our archives in honor of the National Park Service Centennial. It’s time for a voyage through fond memories of 2015…

Entry 015 // Home Away

Location // La Junta Canyon
.
Field Log // It was a bumpy journey, but Betty rumbles up to the door of our mountain cabin no worse for wear. She rests in the meadow while we gather firewood and get the stove going. We will keep this flame alive until we leave. “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer,” wrote Albert Camus. Betty is triumphant.🔥

Location // La Junta Canyon

Field Log // Storm is over, snow is swiftly melting and our yellow steed is stuck in the mud. We’d be worried if Betty were a lesser beast. A warm cabin awaits, and we’re inching our way in the right direction.

Entry 013 // Calm
.
Location // Betty’s first winter weather test is imminent. We are headed up the High Road to Taos, to a cabin not far from the Carson National Forest. The sky is a gloomy cyan, and we listen intently for snow thunder in the distance. Betty hums along cheerily, unaware of the potential peril ahead. It is a blessing that we are well-stocked with provisions. The air is eerily still.

Entry SF07 // Terra
.
Location // White Sands, NM
.
Field Log // Most deserts are composed of quartz, but this 275 mile stretch of tumbling sand is gypsum and calcium sulfate. The terrain is easier on Betty’s well-tread tires, as it reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it and swiftly evaporates surface moisture. It is splendidly cool to the touch.
